As designers, we’re constantly navigating an evolving industry, where trends shift, tools get updated, and expectations grow higher. It’s easy to feel that ever-present pressure, questioning whether we’re keeping up or if our skills are enough. I recently touched on this during an interview I had with DesignJobs about being a woman in design, and it got me thinking even more deeply about the experience of self-doubt and discomfort as part of this journey.
What I’ve come to understand is that these feelings are a natural part of pushing yourself and growing as a designer. Discomfort, though unpleasant, often signals that we’re stepping outside our comfort zones and challenging our creativity. Rather than viewing it as a setback, I’ve learned to embrace it as a powerful indicator of growth.
Embrace the Discomfort, Don’t Fear It
Discomfort and doubt often sneak in when we’re tackling something new—whether it’s taking on a complex project, presenting ideas to a team, or experimenting with a new design direction. It’s easy to let that uncertainty take control, but what we really need to do is reframe it. The discomfort is not a reflection of failure; it’s a sign that we’re evolving.
Think about it: how often have we grown while staying safe within familiar territory? It’s in those moments where we dare to push the boundaries of our work that we find ourselves developing new skills, perspectives, and a deeper confidence in our abilities.
Your Unique Perspective is Your Superpower
Another point I want to emphasize is how important it is to recognize the value of our individuality as designers. There’s so much noise in the creative industry—trends to follow, best practices to stick to—but what ultimately makes you stand out is your unique approach, perspective, and creativity. It’s easy to doubt ourselves when we’re surrounded by the work of others, but that comparison doesn’t define our worth.
When we embrace what makes us different, we begin to truly shine. Even when doubt creeps in, remember that the work we produce is only possible because of our distinctive experiences, skills, and vision. That’s what makes each of us valuable contributors to the design community!
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
As I continue my journey in design, I’ve realized that self-doubt, discomfort, and growth are intertwined. The key is to acknowledge that they’re a part of the process. It’s not about avoiding challenges but embracing them as opportunities to become better at what we do.
So, the next time you feel discomfort as a designer, remember: it’s a sign you’re moving forward. You’re learning, growing, and, most importantly, finding your own voice in the world of design.
